US President Donald Trump announced that he will meet with New York City’s socialist mayor-elect, Zahran Mamdani, tomorrow, Friday, in the Oval Office.
Trump wrote on his “Truth Social” platform on Thursday, “The communist mayor of New York, Zahran Mamdani, has requested a meeting. We have decided that this meeting will take place in the Oval Office on Friday, November 21.”
This week, Trump said he plans to meet with Mamdani, adding that they will “find a solution,” an indication of a possible thaw in relations between the Republican president and the Democratic political star, who each portrayed the other as a political rival.
Trump has always strongly criticized Mamdani, calling him a “communist” and predicting “the destruction of his city of New York if a democratic socialist is elected.”
Trump also previously threatened to deport Mamdani, who was born in Uganda and obtained US citizenship, and threatened to withdraw federal funding from New York City.
A symbol of resistance against Trump
Mamdani went from an obscure congressman to a social media star and a symbol of resistance against Trump during his mayoral campaign.
In his campaign, Mamdani relied on a set of progressive policies and a clear message in opposition to the “aggressive” anti-immigration agenda launched by Trump in his second term in the White House.
The 34-year-old young man attracted a wide segment of New Yorkers and defeated one of its most important political figures, former Governor Andrew Cuomo, by a margin of nearly 9 percentage points.
In his election night victory speech, Mamdani said he wanted New York to show the country how to defeat the president.
But the next day, while talking about his plans to “fortify New York against Trump” once he takes office in January, the new mayor also said he was willing to work with anyone, including the president if it would help New Yorkers.
