BERLIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Rising energy costs are forcing many households to look for ways to reduce heating costs. An effective method is to adjust the room temperature, which not only saves money but also protects the environment. Experts recommend regulating the heating while you are away to avoid unnecessary energy consumption.

In times of rising energy costs, many households are looking for ways to reduce their heating costs. One of the most effective methods is adjusting the room temperature. According to the Federal Environment Agency (UBA), the temperature in living areas should not be above 20 degrees Celsius, as every degree saves less heating energy. A temperature of 18 degrees Celsius is recommended in the kitchen, while 17 degrees Celsius is ideal in the bedroom.

It’s worth lowering the temperature by a few degrees, especially when you’re away. The German Liquid Gas Association (DVFG) points out that just one degree less saves around six percent of energy. If you are away for a longer period of time, the UBA recommends a room temperature of 15 degrees Celsius to avoid unnecessary energy consumption. Markus Lau, technology expert at the DVFG, emphasizes that lowering the room temperature makes sense when you are away for a long time in order to save energy.

An important aspect of heating is preventing mold formation. Temperatures below 15 degrees Celsius can increase the risk of mold, which can be particularly problematic for renters. If it can be proven that the tenant’s heating and ventilation behavior led to the formation of mold, the tenant must pay the repair costs. It is therefore important not to lower the room temperature too much.

Modern thermostatic valves offer an easy way to regulate the room temperature. The thermostatic head, which is marked with numbers, allows you to set the desired temperature. The numbers on the thermostat head represent specific temperature ranges, with the number 3 corresponding to around 20 degrees Celsius. Digital, programmable thermostats also offer the option of controlling the temperature via an app, which enables further optimization of heating costs.
