The highly contagious bird flu, also known as H5 bird flu, has spread in Texas and poses a serious threat to wild and domestic animals. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) has issued an alert to inform the public about the risks and prevention measures. This disease, which spreads easily among birds, has been detected in all 50 states as well as Puerto Rico.
While bird flu primarily affects birds, other animals such as cats, cows, skunks, foxes and raccoons are also susceptible to the infection. The TPWD emphasizes that the public can help interrupt transmission of the disease by minimizing contact with wild birds and preventing waterfowl gathering around food and water sources.
The economic impact of bird flu has been significant as millions of birds have died in Texas and nationwide, causing egg prices to rise. Although human cases are rare, bird flu can spread directly between animals and indirectly through environmental contamination. The TPWD has provided tips for preventing the spread of bird flu, including cleaning bird baths regularly and avoiding contact with sick or dead birds.
Of particular concern is the susceptibility of pets, particularly cats, that hunt outdoors or eat carrion. Pet owners should watch for symptoms such as sudden lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, and difficulty breathing. If there are any signs of infection, it is recommended to consult a veterinarian immediately. Indoor cats are considered less at risk, but caution is still advised.
Health officials in Galveston County recently reported 27 dead birds, six of which tested positive for the highly contagious infection. Eight people who had direct contact with the infected birds tested negative for influenza but are taking Tamiflu out of an abundance of caution. Authorities stress that the risk to the public remains low but advise people to avoid contact with birds.
