Mexico City.- Neighbors of Iztapalapa They reported that the water that runs through their homes continues to arrive dirty and in smaller quantities despite promises of improvement. According to testimonies, the liquid is brown, with mud, sediment and even worms.
In the Second Extension Santiago Acahualtepec neighborhood, some say that they only have supply for one hour a day, between 9 and 10 in the morning, and that on Monday, after the cut on Sunday, the water is more contaminated.
Those affected assure that their desperation persists, with improvised homemade filters, such as socks, old rags or cloth, they try to clean the water before using it; However, the layer of sediment is so dense that sometimes they must let the liquid run for more than an hour to make it appear “a little cleaner.”
“We have tried to get this situation resolved, it is something that constantly bothers us, it is due to hygiene and health” mentioned a resident of the mayor’s office, when questioned.
Also, residents of the mayor’s office go through a complex scenario due to water shortage. In June 2025, the Secretariat of Comprehensive Water Management (SEGIAGUA) implemented a batching system that affected 58 neighborhoods in the district, according to official reports.
In this context, the Mayor’s Office has already recognized that it has a problem and although at the beginning of the year the mayor mentioned that “the mayor’s office will invest 234 million pesos this year from the Social Infrastructure Contribution Fund (FAIS) in drinking water and drainage projects and works and in rainwater filtration”, the neighbors have not seen any improvement.
However, the crisis is intensifying in some neighborhoods, certain areas such as San Pedro, San José, San Lucas, San Ignacio and La Asunción are among the most affected.
Also, residents reported that they have suffered prolonged outages, some report weeks with irregular supply and denounce that the pipes do not always reach the entire population.
“It is that in Iztapalapa There is not always water, and one has to make do with a bucket and perfume,” commented a neighbor.
