Mexico City.- More than 60 members of the National Shelter Network (RNR) They demonstrated this morning in front of the National Palace to demand that the Expenditure Budget of the Federation (PEF) 2026 contemplate a visible and labeled allocation of at least 510 million pesos for the operation of these spaces that “prevent femicides” and provide comprehensive care to women victims of sexist violenceas well as their daughters and sons. The Network serves more than 10,000 women, girls and boys each year, and represents 60% of the existing shelters in the country.
With banners and slogans such as “Shelters yes, femicides no” and “Shelters visible in the budget,” the activists warned that the merger of programs within the PEF “dilutes” the presence of the sector and makes it difficult to know how many resources will actually be allocated to shelters.
“We have sent letters to the Presidency, to the Women’s Secretariat and even to the Treasury. We have not had a response. We demand that the budget be labeled and visible, because what is not named does not exist,” declared Wendy Figueroa, director of the RNR.
The protesters also demanded the immediate release of the second administration of the 2025 budget, denouncing that, two months before the end of the year, the shelters continue to operate without committed resources.
“It is unacceptable that we continue protecting lives without financial support. The Network exists and resists thanks to the women who trust us and whom the Mexican State has failed,” stressed Figueroa Morales.
In front of the National Palace, the women sent a direct message to the president Claudia Sheinbaum: “Listen to our struggle.” They reiterated that guaranteeing the life and safety of women cannot depend on administrative decisions, but on a real budgetary and political commitment. “Without shelters, there is no protection; without a budget, there is no life,” they warned.
