Mexico City.- The mayor of Iztapalapa, Aleida Alavez faces heavy criticism for devoting resources and attention to urban garden programs while hundreds of families affected by recent floods They remain without adequate attention in the demarcation.

During an event to deliver kits from the “Sustainable Iztapalapa” program, the local leader boasted the distribution of 1,600 garden kits and 4,000 mushroom growing kits, benefiting, according to her figures, 5,000 families – approximately 25 thousand people. “Here we learned that sowing is not only about putting the seed in the ground, but about sowing hope, well-being, and the future,” declared Alavez Ruiz in neighborhoods such as Sector Popular and Cerro de la Estrella.

While the mayor was photographed delivering this support, in neighborhoods like San Miguel Teotongo, residents faced diametrically opposite realities: flooded homes, loss of belongings and material damage after the heavy rainswithout the mayor’s office having provided an effective response.

“We have been waiting for days, the water has already entered the houses and no one from the mayor’s office has come. It seems that they care more about their orchards than about our emergency,” denounced María González, affected by the floods.

The contradiction between the mayor’s agenda and the urgent needs of the population has generated discomfort among residents, who have had to organize in a community way to carry out cleaning and desilting tasks, without having the promised support of pumping equipment or the immediate delivery of sheets and pantries.

So far, the mayor’s office has not reported on concrete actions to address the rain emergencywhich has deepened the perception that the local administration prioritizes public image projects over emergency care that affect the safety and assets of Iztapalapa families.
