On Saturday, the Prisoners’ Information Office held the Israeli prison administration fully responsible for the life and safety of the imprisoned Secretary-General of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Ahmed Saadat, calling on the International Committee of the Red Cross and international human rights institutions to intervene immediately to stop the physical and psychological violations he is being subjected to.
The office said in a statement that Saadat (72 years old) is suffering from deteriorating health and a significant loss in weight as a result of his exposure to repeated physical and psychological attacks in Israeli prisons.
He added that Saadat was subjected to physical and psychological attacks inside the isolation of Janot Prison (south), to which he was recently transferred from isolation in Megiddo Prison.
He continued that Saadat was brutally beaten upon his arrival at Janot prison by the Israeli repression units.
The statement quoted documented testimonies that Saadat suffered during the isolation of “Megiddo” from repeated raids on his cell, humiliating searches, a significant decline in his health condition, and a clear drop in his weight, in addition to being subjected to direct physical assault several times as part of a retaliatory policy targeting his symbolism and status.
The statement quoted Saadat’s family as saying that he had previously been afflicted with a skin disease (Scabieus), and had been subjected to harsh conditions of abuse. He was assaulted last March while being transported from Raymond to Megiddo, and was detained in the prison yard for hours with his hands tied and his head covered.
He stressed that what Saadat is being subjected to is a full-fledged crime and a flagrant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions, reflecting the occupation’s intention to liquidate the symbols of the National Movement inside the prisons slowly and under official cover.
Ahmed Saadat has been the Secretary-General of the Front since 2001, and has been detained in Israeli prisons since 2006, where he is serving a 30-year prison sentence in connection with the Front’s assassination of the Israeli Minister of Tourism, Rehavam Ze’evi, in 2001.
The Front is the second largest faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization after the Fatah movement. It was founded on December 11, 1967, as an extension of the Palestinian branch of the Arab Nationalists Movement. It was founded by a group of leaders of the movement and some organizations that were widespread at the time, most notably George Habash, Abu Ali Mustafa, and Wadih Haddad.
