The Prime Minister of Senegal threatens to prosecute the former president on corruption charges news

Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko held responsible for the hidden debts discovered last year to the former regime led by Macky Sall, announcing his intention to dissolve his “Alliance for the Republic” party.

At a massive popular festival organized by the Prime Minister’s supporters in the Senegalese capital, Dakar, Sonko said that his government would pursue the former president on charges of embezzlement and high treason.

The current government announced through a report by the Audit Bureau that the previous regime was providing financial figures to external partners and financiers that did not reflect the country’s economic situation, as the country’s official debt amounted to 132% of the gross domestic product.

Sonko’s statements came days after the International Monetary Fund announced that it had discovered that the previous regime – which ruled the country between 2019 and 2024 – had hidden debts amounting to 7 billion dollars.

The head of the Fund’s mission, Edward Jamil, said that the case of Senegal with a hidden debt of this size constitutes an unprecedented situation in the African region, stressing the need to take urgent corrective measures with the aim of transparency.

Sonko said in a speech to his supporters that the former president and his party were responsible for the economic situation, which he described as catastrophic, calling for the dissolution of the party, which he described as a gang of criminals.

In this context, the Prime Minister said that two ministers in his government will leave the government in an upcoming ministerial reshuffle due to their involvement in suspicions of corruption and legal violations, stressing that any member of his party who participated in corrupting taxpayers’ money will be imprisoned.
