Space travel is poised for significant change as commercial companies like Vast enter the stage to succeed the International Space Station (ISS). The ISS, a symbol of international cooperation since the end of the Cold War, is expected to crash into the Pacific around 2030. This development creates a gap in low Earth orbit that companies like Vast hope to fill.

Vast, backed by cryptocurrency billionaire Jed McCaleb, recently launched a stealthy spacecraft called Haven Demo into orbit. This spacecraft, which has no pressurized cabin or life support systems, is equipped with electronics and machinery that will be critical to future space stations. Max Haot, CEO of Vast, emphasizes the urgency of moving quickly and continually improving systems.

Vast’s plan is to launch the first manned module, Haven-1, next year, which will accommodate four astronauts. By 2032, the company plans to connect nine modules to form a large space station that can accommodate nine people. In the long term, Vast would like to develop space stations with artificial gravity to create an Earth-like environment in space.

The need to keep humans in orbit is justified by Haot on two main grounds: exploration and science. Space stations offer unique opportunities to study the effects of weightlessness on human health and to develop new technologies. Despite the challenges, Haot sees the commercialization of space as an opportunity for increased international cooperation.
