Axios revealed a draft American decision to establish an international force in Gaza with a broad mandate to rule the Strip until 2027 with the possibility of extension, with powers to disarm and destroy the resistance’s military infrastructure.
The draft raises questions reviewed by the “Current of Events” program: Why an “enforcement” force and not a “peacekeeping” force? What is the significance of making its reference the Peace Council instead of the Security Council? How will you disarm without placing the resolution under Chapter Seven?
A fundamental problem emerges – according to analysts – which is that not placing the resolution under Chapter Seven prevents the force from using military force, while Israel considers the force not being subordinate to the Security Council as a diplomatic achievement that serves its interests.
Fears are also increasing that granting the force the authority to disarm without Palestinian negotiation may lead to a future clash, at a time when demands are rising for international guarantees and respect for the Palestinians’ right to self-defense guaranteed by Article 51 of the United Nations Charter.
