The Bundeswehr is facing a major modernization of its equipment after the Bundestag’s budget committee approved eleven new armaments projects worth more than 2.5 billion euros. These investments are part of a larger plan to improve the operational capability of the German armed forces and fulfill their commitments within NATO. A significant part of the funds, almost 800 million euros, will go towards the procurement of the new G95 assault rifle, which will be supplied by Heckler & Koch. The planned number of 250,000 units is intended to ensure that the force is fully equipped in view of the planned increase in personnel.

In addition to armament, the Bundeswehr is investing in modern technologies that are intended to improve reconnaissance and surveillance. A high three-digit number of “Aladin” drones will be procured to strengthen reconnaissance capabilities. In addition, a new, AI-powered surveillance system called “URANOS KI” is being developed, which will initially be used in the new brigade in Lithuania. These systems are intended to improve the Bundeswehr’s ability to effectively monitor large areas and respond to threats.

Another focus of investments is on the air force. The procurement of Joint Strike Missile (JSM) cruise missiles is being increased for the new F-35 fighter aircraft. In addition, laser light modules will be purchased that enable use at night. These measures are intended to strengthen the Bundeswehr’s air superiority and improve its ability to operate effectively in various scenarios.

The modernization of the Bundeswehr is not only a response to current security policy challenges, but also a step towards fulfilling international obligations. With the approved projects, Parliament has already approved 73 major projects with a total value of more than 33 billion euros in 2025. These investments underscore Germany’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities and taking a leading role within NATO.
