A study conducted by researchers at Xiamen Cardiovascular Hospital affiliated with Xiamen University of China, and a team from Shanghai Chest Hospital affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, showed that the benefits of exercise in preventing and treating coronary heart disease may be much better in women.
Based on data from wearable devices for 85,000 participants, the research team systematically analyzed gender differences in preventing and treating coronary heart disease with exercise, finding that women only need 250 minutes of exercise per week to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 30%, while men need 530 minutes, which is equivalent to almost twice the time that women need to achieve the same cardiovascular benefits.
Additional analyzes showed that among those diagnosed with coronary heart disease, women who exercised for 51 minutes per week could reduce their risk of death by 30%, while men needed to exercise for 85 minutes to achieve the same result.
Experts hope that the results of this new research project will constitute a reference for efforts aimed at preventing and treating coronary heart disease for different age groups.
