On Monday, the Syrian Ministry of Energy announced a tender to purchase 7 million barrels of light crude oil, in an attempt to cover the severe shortage of fuel needed to operate power plants, according to what Reuters reported.
The agency stated that Syria is still suffering from a significant deterioration in the electricity sector after 14 years of war, as its current production does not exceed 1.6 gigawatts, compared to 9.5 gigawatts before 2011, which has led to long daily power outages in most governorates.
Reuters added that oil supplies from Iran, which were the main source of energy generation, have stopped since the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad in December, forcing the government to search for urgent alternatives.
She added that since last March, Qatar began supplying the main electricity station in Damascus with liquefied natural gas as a temporary measure to avoid the collapse of the electrical system, pending reaching stable supply agreements.
According to analysts quoted by Reuters, the new tender reflects “an urgent rescue attempt to prevent the aggravation of the energy deficit,” in light of stifling economic pressures and sanctions that hinder Damascus’s ability to import fuel regularly.
