The lack of teachers is a problem that, it seems, will continue in the next decade. This is the conclusion of a study presented this Tuesday, October 7, by Luís Catela Nunes, from Nova SBE, which indicates that until the school year of 2034/35, Portugal will need 39,000 new teachers to replace those who will retire during this period. However, currently only 20,000 new graduates are guaranteed to supply this gap.

The “study of diagnosis of teaching needs from 2025 to 2034” also reveals that there will be a 5% break in the number of students in this period, which contrasts with a reduction of 37% in the number of teachers.

This study also says that of the 122,000 teachers in the asset, “only 76 thousand should remain active until 2034/35”, which states that it is necessary to hire about 3,800 teachers per year to collect the outputs, and in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area will be where more teachers will be needed, as there is a reduction of students in the north and center of the country and an increase of 1% in the capital area.
