The long-awaited film The Secret Agent premieres this week in Portugal, on the same day it hits cinemas in Brazil — Thursday, November 6th. “A film that unites two countries through the power of cinema”, defines Nitrato Filmes, responsible for bringing the film to the country.
“This simultaneous premiere transforms the film into a true Portuguese-language cinematic event”highlights the Portuguese distributor, which also highlights the importance of this milestone for the Brazilian community living in Portugal. “In a country like Portugal, with such a significant Brazilian community, the simultaneous premiere has a special meaning.”
The Secret Agentwhich will represent Brazil at the 2026 Oscars, will be shown in more than 40 theaters across the country (which will soon be announced). Special sessions, both in Brazil and Portugal and in other countries, such as Spainhave been a success with the public, with sold out crowds.

The same success has been seen at film festivals. At Cannes, Brazilian production won the prize for Best Achievementwith the acclaimed Kleber Mendonça Filhoand that of Best Actor, for the protagonist Wagner Moura. The film also won the prestigious FIPRESCI International Critics Awardamong other international distinctions.
Kleber Mendonça Filho’s film takes place in 1977, in Recife. “Brazil, 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his 40s, is on the run. He arrives in Recife during Carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son, but soon realizes that the city is far from being the peaceful refuge he is looking for”, says the film’s synopsis. In addition to the award-winning Bahian actor Wagner Moura, The Secret Agent features performances by Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leone and Isabél Zuaa.
