The Space Force Association, based in Colorado Springs, is dedicated to raising awareness of the US Space Force. Despite its strategic importance, less than 10% of Americans know of its existence. To address this lack of awareness, the organization is establishing chapters across the country that organize events and provide educational initiatives for students, legislators and the public.
Retired Col. Bill Woolf, CEO of the Space Force Association, emphasizes the importance of education about the Space Force’s role. He explains how satellites enable modern technologies and how often people interact with space and the Space Force on a daily basis, whether through the use of GPS or weather apps. These satellites are crucial for navigation and weather forecasting, which are ubiquitous in our everyday lives.
The Space Force, which operates GPS and weather satellites, does not yet have a large number of veterans to help with education. However, a recently passed federal law allows Air Force veterans who participated in space missions to be recognized as Legacy Guardians. This helps build a group of experienced individuals who can promote Space Force awareness.
The Space Force Association recently signed a two-year agreement with the Space Foundation to jointly increase space awareness and promote workforce development. Both organizations face similar national challenges, especially as 90% of space-focused companies struggle to find new employees.
To inspire young people to pursue a career in space, the Space Force Association has created a Space Professional Society for students, offering them development opportunities such as workshops and scholarships. The Space Foundation works to stimulate interest in space careers by providing curricula for teachers and organizing astronaut talks across the country.
Retired Navy Capt. Dominic Anthony “Tony” Antonelli, a former NASA astronaut, recently visited schools in Colorado Springs to encourage students to pursue careers in space. He emphasizes how lucky we are to live on Earth and, whenever possible, shares a photo of Earth taken by a Mars rover that shows Earth as a star.
Woolf emphasizes the need to create more “on-ramps” to get children excited about space and ensure financial support for the Space Force. The entire space economy depends on the support of the Space Force, which ensures freedom of action in, from and to space.
