Assistant Chief of the South Sudanese Forces for Mobilization Affairs, Lieutenant General Johnson Oloni, said that his country will remain neutral towards the ongoing conflict in Sudan, indicating in a brief speech that his forces will secure the Heglig region and its oil fields in West Kordofan State.

The South Sudanese army broadcast pictures showing members of the Sudanese army belonging to the 90th Brigade inside its territory, after their withdrawal from the Heglig area.

The pictures showed tanks, armored vehicles, heavy weapons and ammunition, which were removed and assembled by the South Sudanese army, pending the conditions for the soldiers’ return to Sudan.

On Monday, the Rapid Support Forces announced their control of the Heglig field, stressing that they “secure and protect vital oil installations in the region in a way that guarantees the interests of the Republic of South Sudan, which relies heavily on the flow of oil through Sudanese territory to global markets.”

Attack near Heglig

On Tuesday, local sources reported – according to Anadolu Agency – that a drone of unknown origin targeted prominent leaders in the “Native Administration of West Kordofan State” in the “Fama” area near the Heglig field, killing and wounding dozens.

For its part, the Sudan Constituent Alliance, headed by the Commander of the Rapid Support Forces, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti), said in a statement that 7 leaders of the Native Administration were killed during their visit to Heglig by bombing from a drone, accusing the Sudanese army of responsibility for the attack.

In turn, Rapid Support claimed in another statement that an army drone caused the death and injury of dozens in Heglig, including leaders from the Native Administration, in addition to a number of members of the Heglig Protection Force and Rapid Support.

The Sudanese authorities did not issue any comment regarding the accusations against her from the Rapid Support Forces.

This is not the first time that Rapid Support has targeted oil fields, as the Sudanese authorities had previously accused it of launching a drone attack on the Juba oil processing station in Al-Jabalin in White Nile State, last November 15, which led to a temporary halt in oil exports.

The three states of the Kordofan region (North, West, and South) have been witnessing violent clashes for weeks between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, causing the displacement of tens of thousands during the recent period.
