Siemens has achieved significant success in the European rail market by winning a billion-dollar contract from the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). The German industrial group will deliver up to 200 new double-decker trains for the S-Bahn networks in Zurich and western Switzerland in the coming years. This decision was made in favor of Siemens after the company submitted the most advantageous offer in accordance with procurement law.
The SBB plans to place a firm order for 116 trains, 95 of which will be used in the Zurich S-Bahn network. The rest will operate around Lake Geneva. In addition, SBB has the option to order 84 additional trains if the route offering in the Zurich region is expanded. These new trains are intended to offer more space as they are each 150 meters long and have 540 seats.
The order is not only a financial success for Siemens, but also a strategic victory over its Swiss competitor Stadler Rail. Stadler, which had relied on production in Switzerland with over 200 suppliers, was disappointed with the outcome of the tender. Siemens, on the other hand, plans to build the trains at its factory in Krefeld, underlining the company’s international reach and production capabilities.
This order could have far-reaching effects on the European rail market. Siemens is thereby strengthening its position as the leading provider of rail vehicles in Europe. SBB’s decision could also serve as a signal to other European rail operators looking for modern and efficient train solutions. The new trains are intended not only to increase comfort for passengers, but also to increase operational efficiency.
