The Russian Information Agency reported that Secretary of the Russian Security Council, Sergei Shoigu, arrived in Cairo on Sunday, heading a large delegation that includes high-ranking officials in the fields of armaments and nuclear energy, to hold military talks with the Egyptian leadership.
The agency said that Shoigu is scheduled to meet with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, the Egyptian National Security Advisor, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense, in addition to senior security and intelligence officials.
The agency quoted the press office of the Russian Security Council as saying, in a statement, that “priority issues include the prospects for implementing agreements concluded at the highest level, including military and military-technical cooperation.”
Shoigu is a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin and was a former defense minister who supervised a large part of the Russian war in Ukraine. He still plays a pivotal role in the defense and security system, and represents an influential voice in the Kremlin’s decisions.
Russia and Egypt maintain close relations that combine military ties dating back to the Soviet era and huge agreements in the fields of energy and grains, while Cairo seeks to balance its relations between Russia and its Western partners and its Gulf allies in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the war in the Gaza Strip.
The agency stated that the Russian delegation includes officials from the arms export company Rosoboronexport, the Roscosmos space agency, and the Rosatom nuclear energy agency, in addition to representatives of the Ministries of Interior, Foreign Affairs, Justice, Industry, and the National Guard.
