Last Tuesday, November 4, the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumlived an episode of street harassment when he was walking by Mexico Cityfrom National Palace towards the Ministry of Public Education. A subject, in an apparent state of intoxication, approached the President and proceeded to touch her inappropriately in front of the residents of the capital who were near her. This day, during “The Morning“, Sheinbaum committed to seeking the classification of harassment as a criminal offense in all states of Mexico.
This morning, from the National Palace, The President regretted this episode and gave more details about it: “Why did I walk away? Because it is shorter, it has no other explanation: if we left by car, we would arrive 20 minutes later […]walking to the SEP is five minutes, so we decided to walk; Many people greeted us, without problem, until this totally drunk person approached and that’s when I experienced this episode of harassment..”
The President declared that she filed a complaint against the subject. She said that, since she was young, she has experienced this type of harassment and said that this issue is something that women experience every day in our country.

“Obviously I did feel the closeness of this character, he was, I repeat, totally drunk, I don’t know if he was drugged, but I decided to file a complaint because this is something that I experienced as a woman, but we women in our country experience it. I have experienced it before, when I was not President, when I was a student, as a young person, that it is a crime in Mexico City, not in all states it is a criminal crime, but here it is.“.
The President said that she decided to file the complaint against the subject because he should be an example for the women of Mexico, since no man has the right to violate their personal space without their consent.
“If I don’t present [denuncia], […] What condition are all Mexican women in? If they do this to the President, what will happen to all the young women in our country? […]it is a crime of the common jurisdiction, I filed a complaint; […] It is something that should not happen in our country, and I am not saying this as President, but as a woman and in the representation of Mexican women, it should not happen.“he said forcefully.
Finally, Sheinbaum promised to review the case from the law, together with Citlali Hernández Mora, head of the Women’s Secretariatseeking to classify harassment as a criminal offense in all entities of the country, in the same way that is in force in Mexico City.
“I asked Citlali that we review if it is a criminal offense in all states, because it must be a criminal offense, […] We are going to run a campaign, not related to the President, but to all Mexican women. There must be respect for women, in every sense, and harassment is a crime. No one can violate our personal space, no one, no man has the right to violate our personal space, the only way is the woman’s approval. That can’t happen“he asserted.
