The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumsaid this Monday, October 27, during “La Mañanera del Pueblo” in the National Palace, that he held a phone call last Saturday with his American counterpart, Donald Trumpabout the trade negotiations that both countries have been holding for almost three months.
On November 1, the 90-day period that both countries agreed for a trade negotiation expires, after Trump threatened to impose duty 30% to Mexico.
“I spoke with President Trump on Saturday,” said Claudia Sheinbaum. He pointed out that “let’s give it a few more weeks” to close the issue “of the 54 non-tariff barriers that are pending.”
The Federal President added in the Treasury Room that “in a few weeks” he would communicate with Trump againalthough he did not give an exact date for this new call with the American president to take place.
Claudia Sheinbaum was referring to the barriers that Washington has pointed out, such as restrictions on foreign companies in energy matters, as well as regulatory obstacles in sectors such as agriculture, telecommunications and intellectual property.
The Mexican President had said last week that her government was “very advanced” in trade negotiations with USA.
The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, will travel this week to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum in South Korea, where he is expected to close some agreements with his American counterpart.
Mexico is one of the most vulnerable countries to Trump’s tariffs, since more than 80% of its exports are destined for the United States. its largest trading partner in the free trade agreement T-MEC.
Mexico, the United States and Canada are preparing to review the T-MEC agreement in 2026.
