This Monday, President Claudia Sheinbaum reacted to the threat by the interim president of Peru, José Jerí, to enter the Mexican Embassy in her country to arrest former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, who is being prosecuted for the failed coup attempt by former President Pedro Castillo.
In a press conference, the President warned that any attempt by the Government of Peru to enter the Mexican Embassy in Lima to carry out the arrest would constitute a “serious violation” of international law and Mexican sovereignty.
“It would violate all international laws. Well, nothing more. In other words, the issue is whether an international irregularity is committed, a violation of sovereignty.”he stated.

Chávez has been in the Mexican Embassy for almost three weeks, a country that has granted him political asylum, and since then he has been waiting for Peru to approve a safe passage that allows Castillo’s former prime minister to travel to that country.
In the midst of the new episode of diplomatic tension between both countries, Sheinbaum indicated that there may be differences, but one should always focus on dialogue.
“We may have differences, but always within the framework of international law.”
“This woman’s right to asylum is the right to asylum recognized by international human rights laws. It is a right to asylum within the framework of international relations and its laws, and the violation would be very serious. So dialogue is always the best, you can always have differences and express your opinion. They made the decision to break relations with Mexico, but an intervention in the embassy would be outside the norm.”said the President.
