This Thursday, during “The Morning“, the President Claudia Sheinbaum declared that a renegotiation of the Water Treaty of 1944 con USA; On the contrary, he declared that this same day an agreement could be reached with the northern country related to the treaty.
The President’s statements come after Mexico and the United States held working groups to reach an agreement after Donald Trump threatened to impose a 5% tariff if our country does not deliver the volume of water established in the 1944 agreement.
The President assured that her government maintains permanent talks with US authorities to find a solution that allows compliance with international commitments, but without putting human consumption of water or the rights of national farmers at risk.
“We are seeking to comply with the treaty without affecting human consumption of water, mainly, and also with all the governors to have an agreement and avoid a conflict between us in the face of what the United States may pose.“Sheinbaum noted.

An agreement could be reached today, according to the President
Sheinbaum said he was confident that an agreement would be reached and confirmed that a new technical meeting on the issue would be held this Thursday.
He stressed that Mexico will act “complying with the treaty, but defending the interests of the people and the nation“, so any decision must guarantee water for the population and a fair distribution for agricultural producers.
Likewise, he explained that the meetings continue and that both countries made proposals and counterproposals, which are being analyzed.
He reiterated his confidence that an agreement will be reached that benefits both countries with the recognition, he noted, of the amount of water that exists and the needs of each of the nations.
From the National Palace, the President highlighted that the governors of border states (Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, Coahuila and Chihuahua) are working together to address this situation.
“All the governors of the border are working, particularly those on the eastern side: Tamaulipas, Nuevo León, although Nuevo León does not have as many international dams, Coahuila, Chihuahua in this process“he asserted.
