International online retailer Shein has decided to stop selling sex dolls on its platform worldwide. This decision followed strong criticism directed at the depiction of products with a child-like appearance. The French consumer protection agency expressed concerns over the weekend that the description and categorization of these dolls could indicate content of a child pornographic nature.
Shein responded promptly and removed all relevant offers from its platform. The company announced that it would permanently suspend all seller accounts associated with illegal or non-compliant sex dolls. Additionally, the adult products category has been temporarily removed to prevent further incidents.
Donald Tang, Shein’s CEO, stressed that the fight against child exploitation is non-negotiable for the company. Although the offers in question were third-party marketplace listings, he took the matter personally. Shein plans to trace the sources of the products and take decisive action against those responsible.
France’s General Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Anti-Fraud first raised the concerns on Saturday. In a quick response, Shein removed the child-looking sex doll listings and launched an investigation to determine how these products could even be offered on the platform.
The French finance minister threatened the Singapore-based retailer with a ban in France if it continued selling such products. This threat came just days before the scheduled opening of Shein’s first permanent store in Paris. Protests have already been observed in front of the BHV department store opposite Paris City Hall, where the Shein store is due to open this week.
Shein has long been criticized, not only for the environmental impact of fast fashion, but also for the working conditions of the people who make the products sold on the platform. This latest controversy could further tarnish the company’s image and lead to increased pressure to rethink its business practices.
