The introduction of tri-fold smartphones marks a significant step in the development of mobile technologies. Samsung and Huawei are at the forefront of this innovation, with each company taking its own approach. The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold, which will soon be available in Germany, offers a unique folding mechanism with two hinges and three display areas. In contrast, Huawei has already launched the second generation of its tri-fold smartphone in China, the Mate XTs.

A key difference between the two devices is the folding mechanism. Samsung uses two separate displays: a 6.5-inch outer one and a 10-inch inner one, which is fully protected when closed. Huawei, on the other hand, uses a single large OLED display that can be folded both inwards and outwards. This Z-shaped fold allows the display to be used even when folded, giving the device greater versatility.

In terms of display technology, Samsung offers a refresh rate of 120 Hz and a brightness of up to 2,600 cd/m² with its Dynamic AMOLED 2X display. Huawei uses an LTPO OLED display with a variable refresh rate of up to 90 Hz and a maximum brightness of 1,800 cd/m². These differences could be crucial for users who value display quality.

There are also clear differences in performance. The Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold is equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Elite, which offers superior performance, especially for mobile gaming. Huawei relies on the Kirin 9020, which is solid but cannot keep up with the performance of the Snapdragon. Both devices offer 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage, which is more than enough for most applications.

The camera equipment of the two smartphones also shows differences. Samsung offers a 200-megapixel main camera, while Huawei uses a 50-megapixel camera with a variable aperture. Both devices have their strengths, and initial comparison tests will show which smartphone delivers the better images. When it comes to software, Samsung is ahead with Android 16 and One UI 8, while Huawei relies on HarmonyOS due to US sanctions.
