Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has made his ambitions in the space industry clear. He reportedly plans to start, fund or acquire a rocket company to compete with Elon Musk. These plans could see Altman enter the space sector to support space-based data centers designed to power the next generation of AI systems.

The idea of running data centers in space is not new, but Altman sees it as a way to address the enormous energy demands of AI. By using solar energy in space, these data centers could be operated in a more environmentally friendly manner without further polluting the Earth. He shares this vision with other tech giants such as Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, who are also interested in using space for technological advances.

Altman has already been in talks with Washington-based rocket manufacturer Stoke Space to explore potential partnerships. Stoke Space, founded by former Blue Origin engineers, is developing a fully reusable rocket called Nova. This technology could give Altman a quick entry into the space sector, similar to Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

As Altman moves forward with its plans, OpenAI is under pressure as it faces competition from Google and other big tech companies. The recent challenge from Google’s Gemini chatbot has prompted OpenAI to reallocate its resources and focus on improving its existing products. Despite these challenges, Altman remains optimistic that expansion into space could be the long-term solution to AI’s increasing energy demands.
