For many people, drinking alcohol is an integral part of social events or relaxed evenings. But when does consumption become a danger? A recent study published in the journal Neurology shows that regular, heavy alcohol consumption is linked to more severe brain bleeding and earlier long-term brain damage. Researchers define heavy drinking as drinking three or more alcoholic drinks daily.

A stroke, particularly a brain hemorrhage, occurs when a blood vessel in the brain ruptures and leaks blood into the surrounding tissue. This type of stroke is particularly dangerous and accounts for around 15 to 20 percent of all strokes. Dr. Mitchell Elkind of the American Heart Association emphasizes that bleeding strokes are often more serious and disabling than ischemic strokes, in which a blood clot blocks the blood supply.

In the United States, about 17 percent of adults experience binge drinking, while 6 percent drink heavily on a regular basis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2024, around 29.7 million Americans had an alcohol addiction, which can affect both physical and mental health. The study shows that people who consume an average of three glasses of alcohol per day suffer their brain bleeds on average 11 years earlier than people who consume less alcohol.

The most important risk factor for cerebral hemorrhage is high blood pressure, which becomes more common with age. Nearly half of American adults suffer from high blood pressure. In addition to alcohol, the use of cocaine, methamphetamine and other drugs can also increase the risk of stroke. Experts recommend controlling blood pressure through lifestyle changes and, if necessary, medication to reduce the risk of stroke.
