Mexico City.- So far in the six-year term, and with Andrés Ponce Aceituno As in charge of the capital’s prisons, last September was the month in which the most criminal investigations were initiated against public penitentiary servants, for allegedly helping inmates escape.
During the ninth month of 2025, five investigation folders were opened for cases of prisoner escape in prisons in Mexico City, as revealed by the latest update of open data from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).
According to these figures, four of the cases were reported in Iztapalapa, so they could have happened in the Oriente Men’s Preventive Prison, the Oriente Men’s Penal Sanctions Execution Center, and the Santa Martha Acatitla Men’s and Women’s Social Reintegration Centers; since these prisons are located in said demarcation.
However, it emerged that on September 23, security at the Oriente Men’s Preventive Prison reported the disappearance of an inmate during roll call.
The other investigation was due to a complaint by Gustavo A. Madero, so the crime could have occurred in the North Men’s Preventive Prison and the North Men’s Penal Sanctions Execution Prison.
This crime is contemplated by the Local Penal Codeas that committed by someone who “unduly releases or favors the escape of a person who is legally deprived of that person”, however, the Penitentiary Statistical Notebook of the Government of Mexico only counted one specific escape, probably the one reported on September 23.
According to the statistical history of the SESNSPthe complaints of prisoner escape counted in September, represent almost 50 percent of the 11 registered since Ponce Aceituno was appointed head of the Undersecretariat of the Penitentiary System in October 2024, when the current six-year term just began.
