BERLIN / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – Deutsche Post is increasingly relying on kiosks to close supply gaps in its branch network and at the same time reduce costs. However, this strategy is met with criticism from municipalities and social associations who express concerns about accessibility. The postal service plans to use these machines to offer central functions such as parcel delivery and collection around the clock.

Deutsche Post has announced that it will increasingly rely on the use of vending machines to close the existing gaps in its branch network. This decision comes at a time when the group is under pressure to meet its legal obligations to provide nationwide branch coverage. There are still deficits, particularly in communities with more than 2,000 inhabitants, as the distance to the nearest branch cannot be more than two kilometers. There are currently a lack of 160 branch locations that would actually be required.

The new Post Office machines offer a variety of functions that were previously only available in branches. This includes dropping off and picking up packages, purchasing stamps and dropping off mail. New is the option of video consultation with employees, which is intended to improve customer service. A key advantage of the machines is their availability around the clock, which offers customers more flexibility. In addition, personnel costs are eliminated, which could increase the company’s efficiency.

However, there is also criticism of increasing automation. The German District Association and the social association VdK express concerns that ATMs are not an adequate replacement for real branches, which are considered important public services. The machines could be difficult to use, especially for older people and people with disabilities. Lawmakers have already signaled that they want to prevent the post office network from consisting predominantly of ATMs in the future.

The Postal Service’s strategy could still be of interest to investors as it aims to reduce costs while meeting legal requirements. Automation could have a positive impact on the company’s margin in the medium term by reducing personnel and location costs. This development could also be a signal for other companies that have to overcome similar challenges in the logistics industry.
