During a mass in St. Peter’s Basilica, Leo
This Sunday took place the Jubilee of the Poorone of the numerous festivals that make up the holy year and that attract pilgrims from all over the world. It coincided with the World Day of the Poor, a annual celebration established by Pope Francis, predecessor of Leo XIV, in 2017.
After mass, the Pope was to have lunch at the Vatican with a group of homeless people, refugees and people with disabilities. In Rome, several community events were also organized to help citizens in poverty.
Urges world leaders to address the case
“I therefore urge the Heads of State and the Leaders of Nations to listen to the cry of the poorest,” said Leo XIV during his homily.
“There can be no peace without justice, and the poor They remind us in many wayswith their migration, as well as with their cry so often stifled by the myth of well-being and progress that does not take everyone into account, and that even forgets many creatures, abandoning them to their own destiny,” he noted.
Beyond poverty itself, the pope highlighted that “there are many moral and spiritual situations, which often affect especially the youngest” and which lead to “loneliness.”
The Supreme Pontiff urged the faithful to “be attentive to others”to reach those who live in “the margins” and make them “witnesses of the tenderness of God.”
