Uber has decided to strengthen its autonomous driving strategy through partnerships with leading robotaxi companies such as Pony AI and WeRide. This decision is part of a broader plan to reduce the cost of rides and significantly scale the business by 2030. By working with these specialists, Uber can draw on their expertise in Level 4 autonomous driving, which allows vehicles to operate completely without a human driver in certain environments.
Instead of investing in expensive research and development itself, Uber relies on collaboration with established companies. In the US, Uber is partnering with Waymo, while Pony AI and WeRide are driving expansion in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. These partnerships allow Uber to test real-world usage scenarios without having to build its own vehicle fleets. In Abu Dhabi, WeRide vehicles can already be booked via the Uber platform, demonstrating the practical implementation of this strategy.
In the long term, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi sees robotaxi technology as a central element of the business model. The plan is to reduce costs, increase scale and drastically reduce the previously high driver wages. By 2030, autonomous vehicles should be available in all major markets and account for around a fifth of all journeys. This vision could fundamentally change the way people travel around the world.
Uber shares have benefited from these future plans in recent months, showing that investors are confident in the strategy. With its network of technology partners, Uber is positioning itself as a global pacesetter in the race for autonomous driving without bearing the greatest risks. This strategy could give Uber a decisive advantage in the competition for dominance in the autonomous driving sector.
