The Lobito Corridor in Africa represents a significant infrastructure development that could not only change the economic landscape of the region, but also open up new opportunities for German companies. During his visit to Huambo, Angola, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier emphasized the strategic importance of this approximately 1,300 kilometer long railway connection. This route connects the coastal town of Lobito with the resource-rich areas in the south of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the copper belt of Zambia.

The project aims to speed up the transport of critical minerals such as copper and cobalt, facilitating the export of these raw materials and reducing Europe’s dependence on China. The European Union and the USA are investing heavily in the expansion of the old route, which can currently only be used at low speeds. These investments are part of a larger plan to challenge China’s New Silk Road.

A European consortium won the tender for the project, which creates investment opportunities for European, especially German, companies. Steinmeier encouraged German companies to participate in this strategic infrastructure project, which is of great importance not only economically but also geopolitically.

During his stay in Angola, Steinmeier also visited a demining project run by the Halo Trust organization. These projects are crucial because Angola still has tens of thousands of civil war-era mines in the ground, posing a threat to the population. Steinmeier praised the work of the deminers and emphasized Germany’s support for such projects worldwide.
