Mexico City.- During the first nine months of 2025, the Attorney General’s Office of Mexico City (FGJCDMX) registered 516 investigation folders for the crime of abandonment of peopleaccording to the Statistical Bulletin of Criminal Incidence in Mexico City (January-September 2025). The figure represents a sustained increase compared to 2024 and confirms that, although it is a low-visibility crime, it continues to be a growing social problem.
From January to September, the monthly reports were as follows: January (57), February (60), March (72), April (63), May (56), June (65), July (60), August (54) and September (29). In total, complaints of abandonment averaged 57 cases per month, which is equivalent to almost two complaints a day in the country’s capital.
The five municipalities with the highest incidence of this crime were Iztapalapa, Cuauhtémoc, Gustavo A. Madero, Álvaro Obregón and Coyoacán, districts that also concentrate the highest levels of crime. crimes against life and bodily integrity. Together, these municipalities accumulate around 60% of the files initiated due to abandonment of people in Mexico City during the period analyzed.
In Iztapalapathe FGJCDMX documented the largest number of complaints, mainly related to abandonment of older adults and people with disabilities. In Cuauhtémoc, the cases are linked to homeless people and omissions of care by family members or legal guardians.
In Gustavo A. Madero and Álvaro Obregón, the authorities observed an uptick in cases in popular areas, while in Coyoacán there are complaints of abandonment of minors.
The statistical bulletin warns that the crimes of abandonment of person are classified within the category of “Crimes against life and bodily integrity”, along with injuries and homicides, which reflects the seriousness of the act by putting the health or life of the victim at risk.
Although the incidence of this crime is lower compared to other high-impact crimes, specialists consider that its increase must be addressed with a social and preventive strategy that includes psychological support, social assistance and strengthening support networks for older adults, sick people and minors in vulnerable situations.
With 516 open investigations so far this year, the abandonment of people It emerges as a reflection of family fractures, social inequality and institutional neglect, factors that demand comprehensive policies beyond the criminal sphere.
