The second annual NYSUT Members of Color Conference, held in Albany, attracted over 400 members from across the state. With the theme ‘Reclaiming Our Joy: Building Power through Hope,’ the event provided a platform to share the unique challenges and opportunities faced by members of color in the education industry.

LeRoy Barr, NYSUT board member and secretary of the United Federation of Teachers, emphasized the importance of joy and hope as resilience strategies. He noted that union members of color often bear the burden of systems that were not designed for them and that the conference provides an opportunity to address these challenges together.

The conference took place shortly after the 70th anniversary of Rosa Parks’ historic arrest, highlighted by NYSUT Secretary General J. Philippe Abraham. He recalled that by refusing to give up her seat, Parks sparked a movement that continues to this day. This historical perspective served as inspiration for participants as they grappled with current attacks on education and identity.

The event featured workshops and discussions on topics such as nurturing the next generation of teachers of color, having courageous conversations to advance racial and social justice, and knowing your rights as a member of color. Attendees also had the opportunity to network and make connections with colleagues from across the state.

Finally, keynote speaker Stacy Davis Gates, president of the Illinois Federation of Teachers, encouraged attendees to prepare for the struggles ahead and use their union’s capacity to strengthen the common good. She emphasized the importance of solidarity and the willingness to fight for one’s own rights and those of the community.
