The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) has increased its focus in recent years on commercial partnerships to improve U.S. space capabilities. This strategy is being driven by NRO Director Chris Scolese, who emphasizes the importance of integrating commercial technologies and launch services. Speaking at a Center for Strategic and International Studies conference, Scolese highlighted that the NRO strives to develop systems that provide the best possible information to decision-makers, intelligence analysts and military personnel.
A key aspect of this strategy is the increased use of commercial launch services. Reducing launch costs will allow satellites to be launched more frequently, allowing the NRO to test new technologies more quickly. Scolese explained that the ability to launch low-cost satellites on more frequent flights allows the NRO to demonstrate and further develop technologies and capabilities that could be important in the future.
In the last two years, the NRO has launched more than 200 satellites, improving retry rates, increasing persistence and enabling faster data processing and transmission. This expansion has resulted in a more efficient architecture that delivers a better product to the nation and communities that rely on the NGOs. Despite growing competition for technical talent in the commercial space industry, interest in the NRO remains strong, particularly among students and young professionals drawn to the agency’s mission.
To address the skills shortage, the NGO has launched an internship program that directly involves students in satellite design, development, testing, operations and research. Since the program launched in 2020, approximately 35% of eligible former interns have been hired. These efforts demonstrate that the NGO is committed not only to technological innovation, but also to the development of a skilled and committed workforce.
