The Sentinel-6B satellite, a joint development between NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA), is ready for launch from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The satellite will be launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and is expected to play an important role in monitoring global sea levels. This mission is part of a long-term sea level data collection project that has been ongoing for over 30 years.

The satellite is scheduled to launch on November 17th. After launch, the satellite will be placed into an orbit in which it will circle the Earth every 112 minutes. Sentinel-6B will continue the work of its twin, Sentinel-6 Michael Freilich, which was launched five years ago. The data collected will not only help improve public safety and urban planning, but also optimize commercial activities such as shipping.

Technically, the Sentinel-6B is equipped with sophisticated instrumentation, including a microwave radiometer and a laser retroreflector array. These instruments make it possible to make precise measurements of sea level and collect atmospheric data. This information is critical for forecasting storms and protecting coastal infrastructure, including power plants and military installations.

The mission is supported by an international team including the European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The data collected will not only be used for scientific purposes, but also to support the Artemis astronauts in their safe return to Earth. The collaboration between the various international partners shows the importance of this mission for the global community.
