LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – A comprehensive study has shown that genetic factors play a much larger role in the development of gout than previously thought. The research, which analyzed genetic data from 2.6 million people, identified 377 DNA regions linked to the disease, dispelling the myth that gout is primarily caused by lifestyle.

A new international study has examined the genetic basis of gout and made surprising findings. Gout, a painful form of arthritis, has long been associated primarily with unhealthy diets and excessive alcohol consumption. But recent research shows that genetic factors play a much larger role than previously thought.

The research team analyzed genetic data from 2.6 million people from 13 different DNA data cohorts, including 120,295 people diagnosed with gout. By comparing the genetic codes of those affected and those not affected, scientists were able to identify 377 specific DNA regions linked to gout. Notably, 149 of these regions have never been previously linked to the disease.

The results of the study suggest that genetic factors are important at every stage of disease development. In particular, they affect the likelihood that the body’s immune system will respond to the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints. These crystals are the main cause of the painful symptoms of gout.

Although lifestyle and environmental factors continue to play a role, the new findings highlight the importance of genetics. This could also have implications for the treatment of the disease, as existing medications could potentially be repurposed to control the body’s immune response to the uric acid crystals.

However, the study also points out some limitations. Much of the data comes from people of European descent, and some records are based on self-report rather than clinical diagnoses. Still, the research offers valuable insight into a disease that has plagued people for centuries.

Researchers hope that these new findings will lead to better and more accessible treatment options. Gout should receive more attention and resources in the healthcare system to help those affected more effectively.
