The next director of the Modern Art Center (CAM) will be Sérgio Mah, announces this Monday, October 6, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. “Sérgio Mah will take office in May 2026, succeeding Benjamin Weil that ends his contract on January 31 next year”the foundation in a statement is good.

Sérgio Mah is Deputy Director of Maat – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology since June 2023and was curator of exhibitions by several international artists in that space, the last of which was inaugurated this Saturday, October 5, with Cerith Wyn Evans, which will occupy the space of the Maat Gallery until February 16, 2026. Vivian Sudero exhibitions, Anthony McCall, Jeff Wall and Miriam Cahn were also curated by Sérgio Mah.

The curator already had collaborated with the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation previouslynamely in the exhibition of Alexandre Estrela (2019) and Manuela Marques (2014).

Sérgio Mah was also Exhibition curator in Spain and Francein institutions such as the Reina Sofia National Center Museum, in Madrid, the Mapfre Foundation in Madrid and Barcelona and Jeu de Paume in Paris.

In 2001, it was the Commissioner of the official representation of Portugal to the 54th Biennial of Art of Venice and, in 2018, with Nuno Brandão Costa, from the official representation of Portugal to the 16th Venice Architecture Biennial. It was still Artistic Director of the Lisbon Biennial (2003-2005) and PhotoEspaña (2008-2010).

Born in Mozambique and a degree in Sociology, Sérgio Mah holds a master’s degree in Communication Sciences and a doctorate in multimedia art. Alongside your curatorship activity, He is a professor at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the New University and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon.

This year launched the book Photographic senses and was co -author of RTP2’s documentary series Between imagesshowing the work of 13 artists who work this medium.
