Google has introduced a new metric for Android developers aimed at identifying and fixing battery problems caused by excessive wake locks. This metric is now available to all developers and is considered part of Core Vitals. Developed in close collaboration with Samsung, it is based on practical experience in dealing with battery consumption. After a beta phase, the process was further refined to achieve more precise results.

Wake locks are mechanisms that prevent a device from entering sleep mode to perform background tasks while the screen is off. Google defines a user session as excessive if more than two hours of cumulative, non-exempt wake locks occur within a 24-hour period. System-side wake locks that offer clear advantages, such as for audio playback or user-initiated data transfers, are excluded.

The threshold for problematic behavior is 5 percent of user sessions over a 28-day period. Apps that exceed this value receive a warning on the Android vitals overview page. This measure is intended to help developers make their apps more efficient and optimize battery performance.

Starting March 1, 2026, apps that do not meet the threshold could be excluded from prominent discovery spaces such as recommendations. In some cases, Google Play may also display a warning in the Store listing advising users that the app may be using a lot of battery power. These changes could have a significant impact on the visibility and success of apps in the Google Play Store.
