The United States is still treating the Gaza ceasefire as a means to achieve Israel’s war goals, while Benjamin Netanyahu’s government continues to return things to square one, analysts say.
While the occupation forces are carrying out continuous bombing and destruction operations in several areas of the Gaza Strip under the pretext of destroying military infrastructure belonging to the resistance or responding to attacks by it, Washington does not show any position to oblige Tel Aviv to respect the agreement.
The matter reached the point where Netanyahu – who is wanted by the International Criminal Court – spoke of Israel’s impatience with the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas)’s violations of the agreement, saying that the handing over of the remaining bodies of the prisoners and disarmament “must be done with an iron fist.”
Netanyahu also decided to form a new mini-security council to supervise the second phase of the agreement. Its membership included Defense Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who are staunch opponents of stopping the war.
After this formation, Sa’ar said that Israel gave US President Donald Trump’s peace plan in Gaza a real opportunity through diplomacy, and that failure to continue implementing the agreement “will allow Israel to move militarily with much broader international legitimacy.”
American bias is in a dangerous situation
On the other hand, the Hamas movement called on the mediators and guarantors, especially the United States, to oblige Israel to stop its violations, at a time when Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer asked the United States to “give Israel greater freedom to move in the Gaza Strip even if the second phase of the agreement is implemented.”
These moves by Israel reflect the dangerous reality in the Gaza Strip and the fragility of the peace plan at the present time, in the opinion of former US National Security Advisor Mark Pfeifel, who holds Hamas responsible for the Israeli moves because of what he said were military skirmishes taking place between the two sides, and also because of the movement’s refusal to hand over weapons and its public confirmation of this.
According to what Pfeifel said in the program “The Course of Events,” the only solution to get out of this situation is to accelerate the formation of the international peace force and work to disarm Hamas immediately, because Israel’s expansion of its operations carries a great danger to the agreement.
However, Pfeifel believes that the Israelis are counting on the ability of Trump and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, to convince Netanyahu’s government to reach a certain amount of peace.
However, Palestinian political analyst Ahmed Al-Tanani believes that this talk is nothing more than an indication that the United States continues to see things through an Israeli eye, and seeks to achieve the goals of the war through the ceasefire agreement, as the Israelis seek to normalize the current reality and turn violations into a normal matter.
Washington – as Al-Tanani says – deals with Israeli violations as if they are a normal matter, while it views all the allegations made by Tel Aviv against the resistance as facts, in addition to its extreme keenness to dismantle the resistance’s weapons and the Palestinian national system and impose guardianship over the Gaza Strip.
It is possible that this dealing will lead to a return of confrontations between the two sides, because the resistance wants to continue the agreement as a Palestinian interest, but at the same time it will not allow Israel to continue killing and devouring the land without a political or field price, as Al-Tanani says.
The expert in Israeli affairs, Dr. Muhannad Mustafa, did not differ from the previous opinion by saying that Netanyahu does not only want to normalize violations, but is also trying to return to the policy of extremism, whether in Gaza or the West Bank, after he failed to get what he was planning from this agreement.
Speaking to Mustafa, Netanyahu believed that this agreement would provide more normalization with the countries of the region and obtain a comprehensive amnesty within Israel, which was not achieved, which prompted him to expand settlement in the West Bank and seize land in Gaza to prove that he was working independently to achieve the goals of the war.
Washington is looking for investments
As for Dr. Dalal Erekat, professor of diplomacy and conflict resolution at the Arab American University, she believes that Israel is practicing its usual behavior in distracting attention from the basic rights of the Palestinians by delving into details and buying time under invented pretexts, stressing that the war did not stop in Gaza, just as the killing and annexation did not stop in the West Bank.
Members of the new mini-security council speak openly about settlements and Greater Israel and do not recognize the West Bank at all, Erekat says, noting that settlement expansion “killed every dream of a two-state solution.”
At the same time, the United States is still more interested in discussing its future investments in Gaza than in stopping the killing and destruction, to the point that the new base it established to monitor the agreement has become in the service of Israeli operations, Erekat says.
The Palestinian Academy concluded that everything said about peace “will not be useful unless timetables and frameworks for the work of the international stabilization force are determined, and what is happening on the ground is practically evaluated.”
