Morris County, New Jersey has once again chosen to protect its natural resources. The Open Space Trust Fund Committee has recommended that the Board of County Commissioners invest $6.95 million to preserve more than 192 acres of land. These areas are spread across Denville, Mendham Township and Rockaway Township. The decision on whether these funds will be approved is expected this year.
Since the program’s inception, nearly every community in Morris County has benefited from the grants. Stephen Shaw, deputy director and liaison to the Morris County Office of Planning and Preservation, emphasizes the importance of this initiative. Over 14,750 hectares have already been protected by the municipal and non-profit funding program, with a total of more than 18,300 hectares. These measures contribute significantly to the quality of life of the residents and preserve the region’s ecological heritage.
One outstanding project is the preservation of the Wildcat Ridge Preserve in Rockaway Township. The Land Conservancy of New Jersey is set to receive $1.04 million to protect 123.30 acres. This area is surrounded by federally protected land and provides valuable habitat for wildlife. Preserving this area strengthens long-term conservation efforts in the mountainous region.
Another significant project is the preservation of 57.29 acres in Denville known as St. Francis and Pocono Field. This area was originally purchased by a Catholic sisterhood in 1895 and served as a senior living community for over 120 years. The planned conversion into a modern senior housing complex was abandoned and the land is now to be protected with a grant of $5.7 million.
