MicroVision, a leader in innovative perception technologies, recently announced its intention to acquire Scantinel Photonics GmbH. This strategic acquisition aims to advance the development of Frequency-Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) lidar technology, particularly intended for use in commercial vehicles. Scantinel, based in Ulm, is known for its advanced 1550 nm FMCW technologies that offer improved range and accuracy.
The acquisition is supported by renowned partners from the photonics industry, including the Zeiss Group, the Swedish commercial vehicle manufacturer Scania and the specialized venture capital company PhotonVentures. These partnerships are intended to significantly drive productivity and business development in the field of photonics technology and help MicroVision strengthen its market position.
Glen DeVos, CEO of MicroVision, expressed excitement about the opportunity to bring Scantinel’s groundbreaking FMCW technology to market. Integrating this technology into MicroVision’s existing lidar solutions could significantly improve the safety of commercial vehicles and passenger vehicles, particularly in the areas of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
To facilitate the acquisition, MicroVision plans to establish a new company called Scantinel GmbH. This will be supported by a financing partner to ensure full integration of the Scantinel team and technology by the end of 2025, subject to appropriate regulatory approvals being granted.
MicroVision’s acquisition of Scantinel Photonics could not only accelerate technological development in lidar technology, but also strengthen MicroVision’s competitiveness in the global market. Combining MicroVision’s existing expertise with Scantinel’s advanced technology could set new standards in the safety and efficiency of driver assistance systems.
