Microsoft recently announced that Windows is developing into a so-called ‘agentic OS’. This announcement, made by Pavan Davuluri, the head of Microsoft’s Windows division, has caused considerable anger on social media. Many users criticize that Microsoft’s AI developments do not meet the needs of users. The announcement came as part of a presentation at the Ignite developer conference, where Davuluri discussed connecting devices, cloud and AI to increase productivity.
The reactions to this announcement were mostly negative. More than 1.5 million views and almost 500 comments showed user dissatisfaction before Davuluri limited the ability to reply to the post. The criticism primarily focuses on the perception that no one needs these new features and that Microsoft does not take users’ interests into account. This dissatisfaction is not new, as Windows 11 is already struggling with significant acceptance problems.
A key point of criticism is the increasing cloud requirement, which makes local accounts more difficult to install Windows 11. This development is seen as a nuisance by many, especially since the end of support for Windows 10 is forcing many users to switch to Windows 11. Data protection concerns and the new user interface are other frequently cited criticisms. Despite these challenges, Davuluri promises improvements without announcing a fundamental change of course.
The technical details of the planned ‘agentic OS’ development are still unclear, but the idea of using AI and cloud integration to increase productivity is not new. Microsoft faces the challenge of increasing adoption of its AI strategies while addressing user concerns. The coming months will show whether Microsoft is able to find the balance between innovation and user satisfaction.
