Microsoft is once again faced with the challenge of raising prices for its Xbox consoles. Prices have already been increased twice this year, most recently in September for the US market. Now, global RAM shortages threaten to further increase production costs, which could force Microsoft to reconsider pricing.
Microsoft has reportedly warned its partners that ongoing RAM shortages and rising costs could lead to higher prices for customers. The reason for this is the high demand for memory for AI data centers, which are buying up large amounts of RAM and thus putting a strain on the consumer electronics market.
Interestingly, Sony seems to be less affected by this problem. Industry insiders report that Sony purchased large amounts of RAM at reasonable prices early on and is therefore well prepared for the coming months. This allows Sony to reduce prices on the PlayStation 5, especially in light of the upcoming Black Friday deals.
The situation is further exacerbated by the recent price increase of Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass subscriptions. Game Pass Ultimate now costs $29.99 per month and offers access to over 75 releases per year. These developments could further diminish the Xbox platform’s appeal to consumers, especially if console prices continue to rise.
