This visit underlines the appreciation for the service and sacrifice of soldiers and their families, especially in the run-up to Christmas. The two first ladies visited Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River to express their support and gratitude.
During their stay, they spoke with Lejeune High School students who were in the process of packing 2,000 care packages for soldiers stationed overseas. These packages contained, among other things, Dude Wipes and Jerky Sticks. Melania Trump emphasized that she and the President think of the US soldiers especially during the holidays and wished the students and teachers a happy Thanksgiving.
In a classroom at Lejeune High School, Trump and Vance discussed technological developments and artificial intelligence with students. Students presented their research on the effects of electronic media on adolescent sleep and well-being, as well as the effects of social media on young people’s self-esteem and body image. The First Lady expressed great interest in the use of AI in school and praised the students for their work.
The visit also included an elementary school, where Trump and Vance were seated at separate tables equipped with materials from the first lady’s Be Best initiative. This initiative focuses on the well-being of children, their safety online and the fight against opioid abuse. Usha Vance, who created a summer reading challenge to motivate students to read, spoke to teachers and students about the importance of education and reading support.
