The Secretary of Energy, Luz Elena Gonzálezheld a meeting this Monday with the Secretary of Agriculture of the United States, Brooke Rollins, and the Undersecretary for Commerce and Foreign Agricultural Affairs, of that country, Luke J. Lindberg.

“We talked about opportunities to cooperation on biofuels to strengthen energy security and the sustainable development of both countries,” said the head of Sener, through a message published on her social networks.

Challenges facing agricultural sectors

Meanwhile, the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mexico (It fits), Julio Berdegué Sacristánalso met with the US official, with whom he discussed the priorities and challenges facing agricultural sectors from both countries in health, trade and cooperation issues.

During a bilateral meeting that took place at the facilities of the National Service of
Health, Safety and Agri-Food Quality (Senasica), in Mexico City, the secretary verified the progress of the joint campaign against cattle screwworm. Meanwhile, Secretary Rollins highlighted the great progress made and the cooperation between both countries, both politically and at the health agencies of the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and of Senasica.

In addition, they agreed on short-term priorities and actions that will allow them to take
decisions about the resumption of livestock exports.

Among the main topics addressed is the strengthening of coordination around the screwworm and others animal health issuesas well as the identification of areas of collaboration within the framework of the next review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC).

Solid agri-food integration

The head of Sader emphasized the importance of maintaining trust, certainty and respect for the rules as principles that drive the development of a solid agri-food integration between the three North American countries. He reiterated that Mexico seeks more trade, more integration and more cooperation, for the benefit of producers and consumers.

Both officials spoke about the priorities and opportunities of agri-food trade between Mexico and the United States and they agreed that it is the driving force of the economies of both countries, while ensuring industries and consumers access to high-quality, safe inputs and products at convenient prices.

Prior to the bilateral meeting, the US delegation visited the Emergency Operations Center (Leg), where the chief director of Senasica, Javier Calderón Elizalde, explained that the Health intelligence is a very important core of modern agri-food healthso the Agriculture agency collects, interprets and models data in order to anticipate risks and, based on this, helps to mitigate them.
