The Muskegon Lumberjacks used November 8th to not only host an exciting hockey game against Des Moines, but also to show their appreciation for the military. The event, known as the Military Appreciation, attracted numerous military personnel who shared their experiences and took the opportunity to show their commitment to the community. The Lumberjacks won the game 3-1, which added fuel to the celebrations.
Particularly impressive was the participation of two Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) cadets, who held the American flag and sang the Pledge of Allegiance before the game. Kyler Addington, one of the cadets, explained that his family has a long military tradition and he wanted to use the JROTC program to see if a military career would be an option for him. His colleague Kadin Oplinger expressed his desire to receive shooting training as part of the program.
Army Staff Sergeant Timothy Hamlin, who has served in the military for 14 years, was also in attendance. He explained that the event is an opportunity to renew the commitment of soldiers and inform the community about the opportunities that military service offers. Captain David Kahan, a military intelligence officer, emphasized the importance of such events to raise awareness of the military’s presence and offerings in the region.
Ezra Gennello, the Lumberjacks’ communications director, said the event is an expression of the city of Muskegon’s gratitude to its military veterans and active duty service members. The Lumberjacks, who play 30 home games per season, dedicate one of them to honor the military, often with special jerseys or merchandise.
