The Lufthansa Group has officially expressed its interest in acquiring a stake in Tap Air Portugal as part of the upcoming privatization. The German aviation group has submitted a corresponding letter to the Portuguese company for state investments, Parpública. The aim is to initially acquire a minority stake and establish a long-term partnership with Tap Air Portugal. This strategic alliance could strengthen the Lufthansa Group’s position in Southern Europe and establish Lisbon as an Atlantic hub in the group’s network.
Carsten Spohr, CEO of the Lufthansa Group, emphasizes the importance of this partnership for Portugal’s global connectivity. He promises to preserve Tap Air Portugal’s Portuguese identity and ensure the airline’s sustainable growth. The Lufthansa Group already employs 400 skilled workers in Portugal and plans to build a Lufthansa Technik location near Porto by 2030. These investments underline the Group’s commitment to the region.
The Portuguese government plans to sell 44.9 percent of the shares in Tap Air Portugal to an investor, while 5 percent of the shares will belong to the airline’s staff. The state would therefore retain 50.01 percent of the shares and remain the majority shareholder. The privatization process will take place in six steps, with the expressions of interest phase currently underway. After completing this phase, Parpública will examine the interested parties’ documents and submit a report to the government.
The Lufthansa Group sees the cooperation with Tap Air Portugal as an opportunity to expand connectivity between Europe and other regions of the world such as South America, Africa and North America. This strategic orientation could not only strengthen the Lufthansa Group’s market position, but also open up new growth opportunities for Tap Air Portugal. Industry experts see this partnership as having significant potential for the European aviation industry.
