A notable legal battle has emerged in the world of video games, drawing attention to the use of artificial intelligence in corporate decisions. Publisher Krafton, known for the game Subnautica 2, is facing allegations that it used AI technologies to avoid a $250 million bonus payment. This payment was originally intended for the Unknown Worlds developers who developed the game.

The conflict began when Krafton delayed the release of Subnautica 2, resulting in the bonus payment not being due. Former developers Charles Cleveland, Adam “Max” McGuire and Edward “Ted” Gill claim that Krafton specifically sought ways to avoid paying. A document filed in court alleges that Krafton even resorted to ChatGPT for advice on how to avoid paying.

The use of AI in this context raises questions about the ethical and legal implications. While artificial intelligence is considered a useful tool in many areas, this case shows that it can also be used in less transparent and potentially questionable scenarios. The developers of Unknown Worlds argue that Krafton took control of their company to prevent the bonus payment, which is supported by internal documents that point to a secret “Project X” strategy.

The fact that Krafton allegedly failed to provide evidence of ChatGPT communications raises additional questions. It remains unclear to what extent AI was actually involved in decision-making and what role it played in Krafton’s strategy. This case could have far-reaching implications for the use of AI in business management and will certainly be closely watched by the industry.
