K2 Space, an innovative company based in Torrance, California, recently closed a remarkable round of financing. With $250 million in Series C funding, the company plans to accelerate production of its high-performance satellites. These satellites are designed for the new era of heavy-lift carriers and are intended to push the boundaries of previous satellite technology.

The latest funding round follows $500 million in contracts already signed with commercial and government customers in the US. Redpoint led the financing, supported by T. Rowe Price Associates, Inc., Hedosophia, Altimeter, Lightspeed and Alpine Space Ventures. These investments reflect confidence in K2’s vision, enabled by new launch vehicles such as Falcon 9, Starship and New Glenn.

K2 Space has focused on developing satellite platforms that can operate in various orbits, including low, medium and geostationary Earth orbits. The demand for satellite-based communications and computing power continues to grow, underscoring the need for larger and more powerful satellites. K2 has already developed key hardware components, including a high-performance Hall drive, large solar panels and radiation-resistant avionics.

A significant milestone for K2 is the planned GRAVITAS mission in March 2026. This mission will bring the first full integration of the Mega-Class satellite into space. The mega satellite will fly on launch vehicles such as Falcon 9, Vulcan and Ariane 6 and will offer ten times more power than other satellites in its class. The mission will also demonstrate the capabilities of the 20 kW Hall drive and 10 kW solar panels.

In the future, K2 plans to increase production at its 180,000 square meter factory in Torrance to produce up to 100 high-performance satellites per year. This capacity is intended to support deliveries for existing contracts. K2 also has plans for a larger platform called Giga, designed for super-heavy-lift carriers like Starship and New Glenn, which will offer 100 kW of power per satellite. These developments could enable new categories of missions, including on-orbit computing and larger space telescopes.
